Bird Feeder

As members of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Team Sapsucker, we'd like to thank everyone for the amazing show of support during our Big Day efforts to raise funds for bird conservation. Our total for the day was 264 bird species, three higher than the previous U.S. record for most birds seen on a Big Day!

Bird Keep Beaks In Peak Condition

Bird Feeder

Birds need to keep their beaks in top condition, since beaks are so crucial to feeding. When your back-yard birds swipe their beak from side to side on a twig or metal furniture, they're probably cleaning off debris left after cracking shells and consuming the oily seeds.

How Are The Birds One Year After Gulf Oil Spill

Bird Feeder

It's still too early to measure the full extent of the oil's impacts on Gulf Coast waters, beaches, and saltmarshes, to the region's economy, or to its millions of birds. In this video, Cornell Lab director John Fitzpatrick summarizes what we do know, and reflects on our obligation to restore this national treasure's health.

Spring Bird Observations

Bird Feeder

To my surprise, our male bluebird was chasing a larger, dark bird. This went on until I finally realized Mr. Bluebird was in hot pursuit of a robin that kept coming back for more.

Book By 11 Year Old Is Helping Birds

Bird Feeder

What a great story. It shows that one person, even an 11 year old, can make a difference.

Dear Audubon Society:

As you all are aware of, the oil spill in the Gulf is devistating (sic). My mom has already donated a lot of money to help, but I have an idea that may also help. I am a decent drawer, and I was wondering if I could sell some bird paintings and give the profits to your organization.

She signed her name at the bottom, and added "11 years old and willing to help."

Take Down Bird Feeders To Deter Bears

Bird Feeder

State wildlife officials are asking people to take down their birdfeeders to avoid attracting bears.

"We are receiving reports of bears getting into bird feeders," said Col. David LeCours, of the Department of Fish and Wildlife. "People can help now by removing any food sources that may tempt the bears. That includes taking down bird feeders and not feeding birds until late October."

Bird Feeder Owner vs Squirrels

Bird Feeder

Like many homeowners, I enjoy watching birds at my bird feeder in the winter months. All season long, we have an abundance of feathered visitors – chickadees, nuthatches, finches; ground feeders like cardinals and juncos; and many sparrows and starlings.
