Ornithologists Depend On The Great Backyard Bird Count For Important Data

But she insists birdwatching is not an expensive hobby. She figured she spends about $15 a month on seed. (She lives in a subdivision without mature trees, so pilfering squirrels aren’t an issue.)

Bird Feeder At Notebaert's Exhibit

Bird Feeder

The bird garden features plenty of shrubs that provide shelter and food for nesting and migratory birds. A cardinal and goldfinch were spotted during the first hike, along with plenty of butterflies. A bird feeder has attracted warblers, finches and even ducks, and the museum recently added a hummingbird feeder equipped with sugar water.

To my surprise, our male bluebird was chasing a larger, dark bird. This went on until I finally realized Mr. Bluebird was in hot pursuit of a robin that kept coming back for more.

Reflecting On The Life Of A Cardinal That Visits The Bird Feeder

Very nice article about cardinals in winter and the human response to winter.

Many birds come to my feeder, not just this cardinal. There are bickering jays and lots of tiny chickadees and a pair of wobbly doves, plus the cardinal’s less colorful, and therefore less visible, mate.
